GENERAL
INFORMATION
Help your teen understand, take the time to review the issues and responsibilities
associated with driving. Skill level and driving ability will vary from one student to
another. Once the mandated six (6) hours are completed the permit is signed over to
the student regardless of the student’s driving ability. This is not a pass or fail course.
Parents should be patient and understand that the student is a beginner. Parents
have a minimum of six (6) months to practice with their teen. Driving requires
commitment and discipline from every student and parent or guardian.  
DRIVING SCHOOL SPECIAL LEARNER PERMIT REQUIREMENTS:
Each student must meet the following requirements before the driving school
instructors proceed with behind the wheel.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Have passed the knowledge test-have a signed certificate that reflects a
    passing grade of 80% or better.
  • Have passed a vision test and provide documentation

BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTION INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

  • STARTING-seat adjustment, mirrors, seat belts, parking brake, gear shift
    positions, ignition switch, starting the engine

  • SIGNALING- checking traffic, vehicle in motion

  • STOPPING- checking traffic, signaling, proper positioning, smooth safe stops,
    engine off

  • STEERING- hand positions, proper hand grip, center of lane positioning

  • TURNING- signaling, vehicle positioning, right turns, left turns, right on red

  • BACKING-checking traffic, hand positioning, straight line, speed control

  • HIGHWAY DRIVING- lane positioning, signaling, changing lanes, speed
    control, merging

  • INTERSECTIONS- signaling, lane positioning, right of way, passing

  • THREE POINT TURNS- signaling, vehicle positioning, checking traffic, turning

  • PARKING- signaling, checking traffic, vehicle position, hand position, turning
    of wheel, speed control, proper gears, setting brake, ignition off, removal of key
